Adult Acute Inpatient

The acute inpatient program treats adults in an intensive therapeutic structure, providing medical and psychiatric stabilization and 24-hour nursing care for patients experiencing critical symptoms. It offers a comprehensive treatment approach to stabilizing acute psychiatric and addictive disease problems in adults of all ages.

Patients in crisis will find a safe and structured environment that offers compassion and hope. A multi-disciplinary treatment team including physicians, nurses, activities therapists and social individualized treatment plan is initiated with a special emphasis placed on medication management, as well as individual, group and family therapy.

The ultimate goal of treatment is to stabilize the immediate crisis and to enable the patient to return to the community with skills to promote personal and emotional development, relationship building and independence. Interventions are designed to provide patients with practical tools to manage their symptoms improve their coping abilities and solve their problems. A primary focus of treatment is placed on relapse prevention and education.

In order to reduce the need for future hospitalization, discharge planning is seen as a priority. Staff works towards identifying and coordinating community resource support and aftercare services to assist each patient in meeting their goals. Whenever possible, and clinically appropriate, a patient's family is engaged in the therapeutic process. Family or social support involvement is seen as being a critical issue in the area of relapse prevention.

Adult Partial Hospitalization

This program is appropriate for patients who have mild to moderate mental or emotional disorders who require coordinated, intensive, comprehensive, and multi-disciplinary treatment.  PHP is appropriate for patients who are able to maintain themselves in the community at a minimum to moderate level of functioning and those who present no immediate threat to themselves or others.  PHP also is beneficial for patients who are making a transition from inpatient care back into the community or can be a supplement to the recovery process for patients who have failed to respond adequately to standard weekly outpatient therapy.

The average length of stay varies between 1 to 3 weeks.  Programming includes four group therapy sessions with a short wrap-up session.  Group therapy is the primary mode of treatment, and patients in PHP will have two individual sessions per week with their assigned psychiatrist.   PHP starts at 9:00am and concludes at 3:00pm Sunday thru Saturday (7 days per week).  Lunch is provided as part of the program.

Adult Intensive Outpatient

This program is frequently (but not always) a step down level of care for patients who have been in the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP).  IOP is appropriate for patients who are at a lower risk and no longer require the full day programming that is part of PHP.  Hours of operation for IOP are 9:00am to 12:45 pm Sunday thru Saturday (7 days per week).  Patients are not followed by a psychiatrist at this level of care.

Adult Dual PHP Services

The Dual Diagnosis program (either at the PHP or IOP level) is designed to meet the needs of adults who have both primary psychiatric disorders and substance abuse problems.  The program is based on the 12-step program model and relapse prevention model.  The PHP and IOP continuum of care at Peachford offers immediate access to a structured environment and offers assistance in beginning recovery or maintaining recovery.

Adult Psychiatric Services

The Psychiatric Program (either at the PHP or IOP level) is designed to meet the needs of adults who have primary psychiatric disorders.  The program provides groups that address a variety of problems that may interfere with a person’s ability to function at work or home.  Mental health conditions are characterized by alterations in thinking, mood, or behavior and associated with distress and impaired functioning.  Early intervention is needed many times before it becomes potentially life threatening.  The treatment at Peachford Hospital can help a patient function at a higher level in daily living.

What is ECT?

ECT (Electro Convulsive Therapy) is a treatment for severe episodes of major depression, mania, and some types of schizophrenia.  It involves the use of a brief, controlled electrical current to produce a seizure within the brain.  This seizure activity is believed to bring about certain biochemical changers which may cause your symptoms to diminish or to even disappear.  A series of seizures, generally 4-12, given at a rate of two or three per week, is required to produce such a therapeutic effect.  Sometimes a smaller or larger number may be necessary.

bult4 Is ECT Effective?

Although there have been many advances in the treatment of mental disorders in recent years, ECT remains the most effective, fastest and/or safest treatment for many cases, particularly when alternative treatments, usually medications are either not effective or not safe. Your doctor will discuss with you why ECT is being recommended in your case and what alternative treatments may be available. ECT is most effective in major depression, where it has a strong beneficial effect up to 80-90% of patients. Still there is no guarantee that ECT, or for that matter, any treatment will be effective.

Is ECT Safe?

All treatments have risks and side effects; however, not treating your depression also carries potentially significant risks. Prior to ECT patients will undergo a careful medical, psychiatric and laboratory evaluation to make sure that the treatments can be administered in the safest, most effective manner possible.  Medications may be adjusted to minimize the risk and maximize the effectiveness of the treatments. For most patients the side effects of ECT are relatively minor.
